Guillam returns to Smiley, sees Tarr and beats him bloody, telling Smiley what he has been told by Alleline. Smiley finds that the logbook pages for the night of Tarr's cable have been removed, supporting his story.

Guillam realises that Smiley didn't tell him he had Tarr in case he didn't make it back out of the Circus. Smiley tells Guillam of how, in , he had met Moscow Centre's spymaster Karla, then out of favour with his own side, and urged him to defect, repeatedly begging him to "think of his wife".

Karla had kept Smiley's lighter, engraved as a gift from his wife Ann, and returned to the USSR expecting to be executed. Too late, Smiley realised that he had revealed his own weak spot: his love for his unfaithful wife.

Smiley interviews the duty officer from the night that Prideaux was shot. As the news sent Control into a catatonic state the duty officer called Smiley's home and left a message with Smiley's wife.

Bill Haydon arrived soon after and cleaned out everything related to Prideaux's assignment. Smiley guesses that Haydon was at Smiley's house with Ann, with whom he was having an affair.

He was eventually returned by the Soviets, but told by Esterhase that his career in intelligence was over. Smiley deduces that Polyakov is the "Witchcraft" source.

Alleline, Haydon, Bland, and Esterhase have been giving him low-grade British intelligence in return for supposedly high-grade Soviet intelligence, which the British then trade with the CIA for high-grade American intelligence.

The Soviet intelligence is just enough to keep the CIA interested — but the mole one of the four has actually been passing high-grade British and US material to his handler Polyakov.

Smiley drives to an airfield with the Hungarian-born Esterhase and tells him what he has learned about Witchcraft, threatening to have him deported until he gives up the safe house address.

Smiley instructs Tarr to go to the Paris station and cable London, claiming to have vital information.

As planned, the mole intercepts the cable and, instead of taking action, stalls for time to go to the safe house and alert Polyakov.

Smiley is sitting in wait and arrests the mole—revealed to be Bill Haydon—at gunpoint. Haydon explains that Prideaux told him about the operation in Hungary, and that he persuaded the Soviets to return Prideaux rather than kill him.

He says that Karla respected Smiley's abilities, and his affair with Ann Smiley was Karla's idea to cloud his judgement.

Before Haydon can be traded to the Soviets, Prideaux kills him. Smiley finds Ann has returned home, and he becomes the new head of the Circus.

The project was initiated by Peter Morgan when he wrote a draft of the screenplay, which he offered to Working Title Films to produce.

Morgan dropped out as the writer for personal reasons but still served as an executive producer. Park Chan-wook considered directing the film, but ultimately turned it down.

The production is his first English language film. The director cast Gary Oldman in the role of George Smiley, and described the actor as having "a great face" and "the quiet intensity and intelligence that's needed".

Many actors were connected to the other roles at various points, but only days before filming started, Oldman was still the only lead actor who officially had been contracted.

Principal photography took place between 7 October and 22 December Other scenes were filmed on Hampstead Heath and in Hampstead Ponds , where Smiley is shown swimming, and in the physics department of Imperial College London.

The teams filmed in Budapest for five days. Right before Christmas, the team also filmed in Istanbul for nine days. The film took six months to edit.

The final song in the film, Julio Iglesias ' rendition of the French song " La Mer ", set against a visual montage of various characters and subplots being resolved as Smiley strides into Circus headquarters to assume command, was chosen because it was something the team thought George Smiley would listen to when he was alone; Alfredson described the song as "everything that the world of MI6 isn't".

A scene where Smiley listens to the song was filmed, but eventually cut to avoid giving it too much significance. The film premiered in competition at the 68th Venice International Film Festival on 5 September Focus planned to give the film a wide release in the United States on 9 December but pushed it to January , when it was given an screen release.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy received critical acclaim. The site's critics' consensus states: "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a dense puzzle of anxiety, paranoia, and espionage that director Tomas Alfredson pieces together with utmost skill.

Jonathan Romney of The Independent wrote, "The script is a brilliant feat of condensation and restructuring: writers Peter Straughan and the late Bridget O'Connor realise the novel is overtly about information and its flow, and reshape its daunting complexity to highlight that".

It's easily one of the year's best films. Enois Duarte of High-Def Digest also praised the film as a "brilliant display of drama, mystery and suspense, one which regards its audience with intelligence".

The Telegraph ' s Guy Stagg, meanwhile, thought that the movie needed a car chase in the middle. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

George Smiley , former senior official of Britain's Secret Intelligence Service known as "the Circus" because its London office is at Cambridge Circus , has been living in unhappy retirement for a year after an operation in Czechoslovakia , codenamed Testify, ended in disaster with the capture and torture of agent Jim Prideaux.

The failure resulted in the dismissals of Smiley and his superior, Control , the head of the Circus. Smiley is unexpectedly approached by Peter Guillam , his former protege at the Circus, and Under-Secretary Oliver Lacon, the Civil Service officer responsible for overseeing the Circus.

At Lacon's home they meet with Ricki Tarr, a Circus agent who had been missing for months and had been declared persona non grata upon suspicion of having defected to Moscow.

Tarr tells them of the existence of a Soviet mole at the highest level of the Circus. The mole is codenamed Gerald and is handled by Moscow Centre's agent, Polyakov, stationed at the Soviet embassy in London.

Tarr tells them that when he obtained this information from a female Russian diplomat visiting Hong Kong and informed London, the woman was forcibly returned to Moscow.

Tarr, realising someone in London had betrayed him, went on the run, eventually coming out to contact his former boss Guillam, the only person in the Circus he could trust.

Since Control died shortly after his forced retirement, Guillam and Smiley are the only former top operatives still alive who are above suspicion.

The fact that they have been demoted and dismissed, respectively, as a result of Operation Testify is virtual proof that neither of them is a double agent.

Smiley accepts Lacon's request to begin his investigation in absolute secrecy. He begins by focussing on the restructuring initiative in the wake of his and Control's ousting, spearheaded by Percy Alleline.

He discovers that various members of Control's supporters, such as Jerry Westerby and Connie Sachs , were forced out following Testify's failure, and also discovers payments out of a slush fund to 'Mr.

Ellis', the codename of Jim Prideaux. Smiley visits Sachs to investigate further, discovering that she confronted Alleline about her discovery that Polyakov was actually a Soviet Colonel called Viktorov, but he ordered her to drop the subject.

She also mentions that there were rumours of a secret Soviet facility for training moles, and makes allusions to Prideaux and Bill Haydon's relationship being more than just a platonic friendship.

Soon, Smiley focuses on Source Merlin, one of the Circus' best sources of intelligence that was vigorously sponsored under an operation codenamed Witchcraft, and supported by four ambitious senior Circus officials, Percy Alleline , Toby Esterhase , Bill Haydon , and Roy Bland.

Following Control's ousting, Alleline has risen to the role of Spymaster in the Circus, and is supported by these three men, colloquially known as the 'Magic Circle' by some.

Smiley concludes that one of those four men has to be Gerald. By examining classified documents surreptitiously provided by Lacon and Guillam, Smiley discovers that the operation has a secret London end: a safe house where Alleline and his inner circle personally collect information from a Merlin emissary posted in London under diplomatic cover.

Eventually, Smiley realises that the emissary must be Polyakov himself, and that the actual flow of information goes the other way, with Gerald passing actual British secrets "gold dust" while receiving fake and worthless Soviet material "chicken feed".

They also discover that the log from the night Tarr reported in from Hong Kong has been removed, and Guillam starts to suffer from paranoia as a result of their operation.

In a break between investigation, Smiley and Guillam start to discuss Karla over dinner. Although Guillam knows little, Smiley recounts a wealth of information he knows on him, although much speculation is also included.

Smiley tells Guillam that the Circus believe he follows in his fathers footsteps, who was first an Okhrana operative, and then a member of the Cheka , but that this cannot be proven.

He went quiet following this, but resurfaced directing partisan operations behind German lines in the wake of Operation Barbarossa.

Smiley then states he believes somewhere during this gap, Karla visited London and recruited Gerald. Smiley points out, amongst other things, Karla's extreme dedication to the Soviet Union, and presumably communism, highlighting his current rank despite his internment in a gulag after his unit was purged following the end of the Second World War, and his decision to return to the USSR and face presumable execution instead of defecting to the West in when a radio operation in California failed.

Smiley recounts meeting him in a New Delhi prison during this time, where he attempted to ply him to defect with cigarettes and promises that they could get any family he had out to the West safely.

However, Smiley admits that all this did was reveal his only weakness, the unrequited love that Smiley has for his wife, Ann.

He offers the lighter Ann bought him to light a cigarette, but Karla merely takes it, and indicates he wishes to go back to his cell, keeping the lighter as a symbol of his victory over Smiley.

Smiley concludes by telling Guillam that as a result of that arrest, Karla has never used radio on an operation since Smiley suspects a link between Merlin and the botched Operation Testify.

He finds Sam Collins, who was duty officer that night. Sam tells Smiley that Control ordered him to relay the report of the Czech operation only to him, but that when he did so, Control froze up, and that Bill Haydon's sudden arrival was the only reason the hierarchy didn't fall apart that night.

Smiley then visits Max, a Czech operative who served as a legman for Jim on the operation. Max tells Smiley that there were difficulties from the start of the operation, and that Prideaux gave him instructions to leave Czechoslovakia any way that he could if Jim didn't surface at the rendezvous at the appointed time.

Next, Smiley pays a visit to Jerry Westerby, a newspaperman who tells Smiley of his trip to Prague where Jerry picked up a story about Jim by a young army conscript who insists that the Russians were in the woods waiting for Jim a full day before the ambush.

Finally, Smiley tracks down Prideaux and questions him on Testify. Prideaux tells him Control believed there was a mole in the Circus, and had whittled it down to five men, Alleline Tinker , Haydon Tailor , Bland Soldier , Esterhase Poorman , and Smiley himself Beggerman , and that his orders were to obtain the identity from a defector in Czech intelligence who knew.

He tells Smiley he almost didn't make the rendezvous with Max because he noticed he was being tailed, and that when he made it the site to meet with the defector, he was ambushed.

As he attempted to escape, Jim took two bullets to his right shoulder, where they remain. During his captivity, both Polyakov and Karla interrogated him, focussing solely on the extent and status of Control's investigation.

The Czech defector was a plant, contrived by Karla to engineer Control's downfall through Testify's failure, and thus protect the mole.

Esterhase, upon arriving to a meeting called by Guillam under a false pretext, is quickly detained. Smiley states that he is aware that Esterhase has been posing as a Russian mole, with Polyakov as his handler, ostensibly in order to provide cover for Merlin's emissary Polyakov.

Smiley compels Esterhase into revealing the location of the safe house, through making him realise that not only is there a real Soviet mole embedded in the SIS, but also that Polyakov has not been "turned" to work in British interest pretending to run the "mole" Esterhase, and in fact remains Karla's agent.

Tarr is sent to Paris where he passes a coded message to Alleline about "information crucial to the well-being of the Service".

This triggers an emergency meeting between Gerald and Polyakov at the safe house where Smiley and Guillam are lying in wait.

Haydon is revealed to be the mole. Haydon's interrogation reveals that he had been recruited several decades ago by Karla and became a full-fledged Soviet spy partly for political reasons, partly in frustration at Britain's rapidly declining influence on the world stage.

He is expected to be exchanged with the Soviet Union for several of the agents he betrayed, but is killed shortly before he is due to leave England.

Although the identity of his killer is not explicitly revealed, it is strongly implied to be Prideaux. Smiley is appointed temporary head of the Circus to deal with the fallout, and is still head at the start of the second book of The Karla Trilogy , The Honourable Schoolboy.

Control , chief of the Circus, suspects one of the five senior intelligence officers at the Circus to be a long-standing Soviet mole and assigns code names with the intention that should his agent Jim Prideaux uncover information about the identity of the mole, Prideaux can relay it back to the Circus using a simple, easy-to-recall codename.

The names are derived from the English children's rhyme " Tinker, Tailor ":. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy employs spy jargon that is presented as the authentic insider-speak of British Intelligence.

The television adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy also uses the term "burrower" for a researcher recruited from a university, a term taken from the novel's immediate sequel The Honourable Schoolboy.

Karla and George Smiley meet while Karla is in prison in Delhi, with Smiley trying to persuade Karla to defect during an interrogation in which Karla gives nothing away.

Karla possesses a cigarette lighter given to Smiley by his wife, which he took during Smiley's interrogation of him. In Smiley's People , a murder in London sets in motion a chain of events that lead to the defection of Karla; it is implied that without him, Moscow Centre will be considerably weakened.
